Reporting Profile

Brief Overview:

Since 2017, the REWE Group has published its Sustainability Report annually; previously, it was published every two years from 2009. The company

  • covers the REWE Group companies for Germany and Austria including the independent retailers in the partnership model, unless otherwise stated;
  • relies on the participation of many experts from different units of the REWE Group who implement sustainability in different departments and for numerous subject areas in the preparation of the report;
  • has selected data from its reporting audited by external auditors with limited assurance

In this Sustainability Report, the REWE Group takes stock of the main impacts of its business activities in 2022 and presents its key figures, targets and measures. The report is available online and as a PDF file in German and English. It is based on the standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and assigns the key GRI aspects to the four pillars of the REWE Group sustainability strategy. There is a search function for the GRI indicators. Other components of the online report include a general search function, a presentation of focus topics, links to further online information, a summary of all targets and KPIs on one page and an archive of previous reports as PDF files. In addition, the REWE Group presents selected supply chains and their impact opportunities and shows how it contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relevant to the company.

GRI 2-2: Entities included in the organization’s sustainability reporting

Scope

The reporting covers the REWE Group companies for Germany and Austria, including the independent retailers in the partnership model (referred to as retailers in the report). In this case, REWE and the retailers jointly establish a general mercantile partnership (oHG). The key figures include all retailers who can be recorded via a central accounting system – this is around 95 per cent.

Due to the abundance of activities and their entrepreneurial independence, the social sustainability commitment of the independent retailers is only recorded in individual cases and reported accordingly. This likewise applies to the locations outside Germany and Austria.

Where the coverage limits differ, this is made clear in the presentation of the data. For instance, the climate data is recorded for the entire group.

Reporting Period and Participation

The REWE Group Sustainability Report 2022 refers to the 2022 financial year (1 January 2022 to 31 December 2022) and was published on 29 June 2023. Editorial deadline was 16 June 2023.

Since 2017, the REWE Group has published its Sustainability Report annually. From 2009 to 2016 the report was published every two years.

Many experts from different units of the REWE Group have contributed to the contents of said Sustainability Report. They implement sustainability in different departments, countries and for numerous subject areas. The Corporate Responsibility department, headed by Nicola Tanaskovic, is responsible for the preparation of the report and is available to answer any questions:

Many experts from different units of the REWE Group have contributed to the contents of said Sustainability Report.

Editorial note: In this report, the REWE Group uses appreciative and gender-appropriate language. Gender-neutral formulations are used as far as possible. In cases where this is not reasonably applicable, the so-called gender colon serves as an alternative. In this way, in addition to men and women, people are also addressed who assign themselves neither to the male nor the female gender. For groups that are not named individually, such as "suppliers", "producers", "manufacturers", "growers" or "partners", as well as for spellings established within the Group (e.g. "employee satisfaction"), the generic masculine is used.

GRI 2-4: Restatements of information

Changes Compared to the Previous Year

As part of the acquisition of the Lekkerland Group with effect from 1 January 2020, the new business segment Convenience was formed. It comprises the sections Convenience Germany, Convenience International and Convenience Central Companies. The integration of the Lekkerland Group has not yet been completed in the 2022 reporting year and will still take time with regard to data integration, process harmonisation and objectives. Therefore, the Lekkerland sales division is not generally included in the data and key figures in this report. If data and key figures for Lekkerland are specified, this will be explicitly stated.

With regard to key figures of employees, there are minor deviations in 2022 compared to the previous year's reports, which are not specifically reported due to their insignificance. For example, two Lekkerland company codes were added in Germany that were not included in the previous year. Furthermore, there was a correction in the category Executives for the position of specialist advisors, which was assigned to the category Employees instead. This also entails a change in the figures from previous years and primarily affects the chapter on Diversity, Equal Opportunities and Equal Treatment. At REWE Group in Austria, only National Travel and Tourism was previously reported; in 2022, the scope was expanded to include DER Touristik Austria. This entails a slight increase in the headcount, also for previous years. Furthermore, the wage types used to determine the company pension scheme were revised or partially corrected in this area. As a result, there are also minor deviations in the previous years.

In the area of energy, climate and environment, there are deviations in various key figures compared to the previous year, as consolidation units have been eliminated and values therefore had to be adjusted retroactively. This is to enable comparability of the data with the reporting year. In addition, some incorrectly stated consumption values were corrected. The corresponding changes are reported in the tables.

GRI 2-5: External assurance

Report Audit

The REWE Group has selected data from its German reporting audited by KPMG Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft AG with limited assurance. Audited report sections are bracketed and marked with a in the German version of this report. The audit opinion contains data on the audit assignment as well as the presentation of the audit results (see auditor’s opinion).

The carbon footprint is calculated and checked by external service providers: for Germany by INFRAS AG, for Austria and CEE by denkstatt GmbH.
