# Artboard 1

Together
for more Biodiversity

Our aim is to preserve and promote biodiversity – for a good climate, clean water, growth and good harvests.

We are committed to the goals of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.

We integrate the protection and promotion of biodiversity into our sustainability management.

  • By 2025, we aim to convert all relevant regional free-range fruit and vegetable products in Germany to biodiversity-promoting cultivation.
  • We aim to convert our private label and branded products at REWE and PENNY in Germany as well as at toom Baumarkt DIY stores to peat-free soils by 2025.

Our Measures

What we do specifically

We purchase raw materials certified in accordance with biodiversity criteria.

We rely on cooperation with partners such as NABU or the foundation “Stiftung Rheinische Kulturlandschaft”. Together, we are implementing measures to promote biodiversity among our fruit and vegetable suppliers, such as in Poland’s largest apple-growing region.

We sell beneficial insect-friendly plants at REWE and toom Baumarkt DIY stores as well as peat-free soils at REWE, PENNY and toom Baumarkt DIY stores in Germany.

We reduce the pesticide load on fruit and vegetables as well as on plants at toom Baumarkt DIY stores.

At toom Baumarkt DIY stores, we refrain from selling products containing glyphosate.

Together with the Polish nature conservation organisation OTOP and local farmers, REWE implements biodiversity measures on apple plantations in Poland for the “Aus Liebe zur Biene” (For the Love of Bees) juices.

We are committed to biodiversity, for example with the “Food for Biodiversity“ association and cross-industry with the initiative “Biodiversity in Good Company”.

Our Achievements

What we have already achieved

All conventional bananas and pineapples that we sell are Rainforest Alliance certified.

Since 2010, we have planted or enhanced 13.5 million square metres of flower strips in Germany with our PRO PLANET project – the oldest and largest biodiversity project in the German food retail sector.

We are cooperating with over 550 fruit and vegetable farms to promote biodiversity.

We participated in the EU-wide project “Biodiversity in Standards and Labels for the Food Industry” for the protection of biodiversity and have, among other things, developed recommendations for action.

The scope covers the private labels of the REWE and PENNY sales lines in Germany; deviations are explicitly mentioned.
