Together
for More Climate Protection

We aim to make a measurable contribution to limiting global warming.

We are aware of our responsibility for climate protection and are reducing the GHG emissions in our business processes as well as in our product supply chains.

  • We aim to become climate neutral at company level by 2040 (all countries and companies of the REWE Group).
  • We will reduce GHG emissions by 30 percent at corporate level by 2030 (all countries and companies of the REWE Group).
  • We will join the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) with REWE and PENNY in Germany. Registration will be completed by autumn 2023.
  • We are planning to agree climate targets with our suppliers by the end of 2024.

Our Measures

What we do specifically

At corporate level:

We use more climate-friendly and natural refrigerants.

We are building resource-saving and energy-efficient stores in accordance with the Green Building criteria of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

We are optimising our logistics in order to reduce emissions during transport of goods.

Since 2008 we have been using certified green energy in all stores, DIY stores, warehouses and travel agencies. From 2025 onwards, we will obtain approximately one tenth of our annual total capacity from a wind farm in the North Sea.

We are reducing our consumption of fossil fuels, including district heating by 20 per cent from 2019 to 2030.

In the supply chain:

We will make our wood/paper, palm oil and soy feed supply chains deforestation-free by the end of 2025.

By the end of 2030, we will make the sales and service packaging of our private labels at REWE, PENNY and toom Baumarkt DIY stores more eco-friendly and thus reduce emissions during production.

We support our suppliers in defining climate targets with the REWE Group Supplier Platform.

By the end of 2025, we are converting our soil assortment at REWE, PENNY and toom Baumarkt DIY stores in Germany to peat-free alternatives.

We cultivate our PRO PLANET peppers, tomatoes and strawberries in sustainably operated greenhouses.

We are constantly expanding the ranges of our purely plant-based private labels, which save emissions during production compared to animal products.

Our Achievements

What we have already achieved

We have reduced the specific GHG emissions at corporate level in Germany and Austria by more than half compared with 2006.

Our private label range of products has been certified as deforestation-free for fresh eggs, drinking milk and fresh poultry since 2019 – and for pork and beef since 2021.

We support the NABU Climate Fund – the largest wetland restoration project for agricultural land in Europe – with at least five million euros annually.

Since 2008, 371 stores have been built in accordance with the DGNB Green Building criteria and over 150 are under construction or planned.

We have innovatively driven the industry forward with our vegan private labels “Food for Future” and “REWE Bio + vegan”. Our vegan product range received the PETA Vegan Food Award.

The scope of Goals, Measures and Achievements in the Supply Chain covers the private labels of the REWE and PENNY sales lines in Germany; deviations are explicitly mentioned.
