Together
for Human Rights and Fairness

We aim to strengthen human rights, improve working conditions, and promote fair trade in our supply chains.

In our Declaration of Principles we are committed to strengthening human and environmental rights and to preventing, minimising, and remedying its violations.

As per our Supplier Code of Conduct, we require our suppliers not to violate human rights obligations – and to bindingly pass on these obligations in the upstream supply chain.

  • We will improve access to grievance mechanisms in the relevant supply chains by 2025.
  • We will integrate all our strategic production sites, as well as all strategic suppliers, into our Capacity Building training programme by 2030.

Our Measures

What we do specifically

We are guided by international standards and guidelines, such as the core labour standards of the International Labour Organization or the German Act on Corporate Due Diligence Obligations in Supply Chains (LkSG).

With our Supplier Code of Conduct and our Declaration of Principles Human Rights, we create a binding framework for suppliers, business partners, and employees.

We integrate analysis of human rights risks into our supplier evaluation.

In reference to the German Act on Corporate Due Diligence Obligations in Supply Chains (LkSG), we have established a comprehensive risk management system for the entire group.

We implement comprehensive preventive measures to guarantee human rights due diligence in our company and our supply chains.

We support strategic suppliers and production sites when establishing internal grievance mechanisms.

We are involved in alliances, standards, and initiatives such as amfori BSCI, Cotton made in Africa or the Forum “Nachhaltiger Kakao” (German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa).

We appoint a central Human Rights Officer to monitor the risk management system.

Our Achievements

What we have already achieved

Within the framework of the German Act on Corporate Due Diligence Obligations in Supply Chains (LkSG), we have set up a digital grievance system. In this way, human rights violations and environmental issues can be reported at any time.

Using the EcoVadis assessment tool, we have conducted a supplier rating as well as training with buyers and suppliers in relation to sustainable procurement.

We have defined guidelines with clear requirements and objectives based on risk analyses for focus raw materials. Social issues are therefore firmly integrated into our procurement processes.

We have largely met our certification targets for purchasing critical raw materials.

In the area of purchasing, we have developed internal e-learning covering the obligations of the LkSG for all employees who work in this area.

29 companies in important production countries have completed our trainings or begun training.

100 per cent of Tier 1 production sites in risk countries are integrated into our Social Improvement Programme.

Projects in our supply chains enable us to have a positive impact on producers of raw materials, such as bananas, orange juice, or cocoa.

An internal information portal provides access to all requirements and guidelines on responsible purchasing.

The scope covers the private labels of the sales lines REWE, PENNY, and toom Baumarkt DIY stores in Germany; deviations are explicitly mentioned.
