GRI 2-7: Employees
Information on Employees and Other Workers
The total headcount in the REWE Combine in Germany and Austria including all independent retailers (scope of the Sustainability Report) remained unchanged between 2021 and 2022 and stood at around 266,000 (2021: 264,000). In total, REWE Group currently employs approximately 384,000 staff across Europe (2021: 380,000).
The scope also comprises about 74,000 employees from independent REWE retailers (2021: 72,000). For the first time in the reporting year, three retailers of BILLA in Austria with approximately 80 employees were taken into account. Retailers mainly operate their stores in the REWE partnership model. In this case, REWE and the retailers jointly establish a general mercantile partnership (oHG). The key figures include all retailers who can be recorded via a central accounting system - this amounts to around 95 per cent (2021: 95).
In the reporting year, the scope was extended by DER Touristik Austria and two Lekkerland company codes in Germany. The values for 2020 and 2021 were adjusted retrospectively.
The scope of employee KPIs does not comprise further foreign subsidiaries of the REWE Group, non-group national and international companies, the independent retail, REWE Dortmund SE, akzenta, REWE Spedition und Logistik GmbH and small companies such as ZooRoyal, Eurogroup in Germany as well as ADEG and Sutterlüty in Austria.
For years, the percentage of trainees in the workforce in Germany and Austria has been constant. In 2022, it was on the same level as in the previous year at 5.5 per cent. In the reporting period, the share of part-time employees (excluding marginally employed and trainees) was around 41.6 per cent (2021: 41.8). The share of employees with permanent contracts amounted to around 87.8 per cent in 2022 (2021: 87.7). In Austria, all new employment contracts are usually fixed-term. These country-specific "terminations" are included in the number of fixed-term employment contracts.

As of the balance sheet date 31 December 2022, 189,754 (2021: 189,764) of a total of 192,468 employees of the group companies (2021: 192,327; excluding employees at independent REWE retailers in partnership model) were covered by collective agreements and/or company agreements - i.e. 98.6 per cent (2021: 98.6).
The REWE retailers are independent companies in the legal form of general mercantile partnership (oHG). A collective agreement is normally drawn up when a company joins an employers’ association. Joining is the autonomous decision of the independent REWE retailers. The retailers must commit to minimum standards in HR matters vis-à-vis the REWE Group. This likewise includes compliance with all laws, e.g. concerning the minimum wage.
