Eco-Friendly Packaging

We aim to use as little packaging as possible and as necessary, and to make unavoidable packaging more eco-friendly and recyclable.

We are committed to conserving resources.

We aim to avoid, reduce, or improve packaging.

  • By the end of 2030, we will make 100 per cent of all private label packaging at the REWE Group in Germany (REWE, PENNY, and toom Baumarkt DIY stores) and at the international sales lines (BILLA, BILLA PLUS, PENNY, and ADEG) more eco-friendly.
  • We are reducing the plastic content of plastic packaging and designing it to be 100 per cent recyclable.
  • We are increasing the recyclate content of private label packaging.
  • We are doubling the range of products offered in “Mehrweg & Unverpackt” (reusable and unpacked) category.

Our Measures

What we do specifically

We systematically apply the principle of “avoid, reduce and improve” to all purchasing processes – e.g., we offer more and more organic fruit and vegetables either unpackaged or in improved packaging.

We cut down on material for packaging, eliminate components such as yoghurt lids, and are committed to reusable solutions and alternative options.

We promote innovative solutions for packaging with our own initiatives and partners, such as GS1 Germany.

We are increasing the average recyclate content in different product ranges – e.g., in the areas of beverages (see Achievements), drugstore, or paint buckets.

Our Achievements

What we have already achieved

We have been offering unpackaged fruit and vegetablesfor a long time. In the case of the REWE Bio brand alone, this saves around 210 tonnes of plastic and 80 tonnes of paper per year, and these figures are set to increase.

At PENNY, so far the only food retailer in Germany to do so, we use reusable alternatives instead of disposable crates for Bio-Helden bananas, and at toom Baumarkt DIY stores, we use reusable alternatives instead of disposable plant pallets.

In 2019, we became the first food retailer to introduce drinks bottles made of recycled material. Potting soil at toom Baumarkt DIY stores is also packaged in recycled material.

We met our target of using 20 per cent less plastic in private label packaging in comparison to 2015 ahead of time in 2021.

In 2020, we became the first food retailer in Germany to introduce a trial salad reusable bar system at REWE. A particularly customer-friendly reusable system was introduced in 2023.

In 2018, we became the first major food retailer to introduce reusable net bags across Germany and we stopped using plastic bags long before they were banned by law.

The scope covers the private labels of the REWE and PENNY sales lines in Germany; deviations are explicitly mentioned.
