Foreword

Responsibility is demonstrated not through words, but through our daily actions

Ladies and gentlemen,

We are living in times of profound upheaval. Geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainties and societal expectations are noticeably altering the environment in which we operate. What was once considered abstract now has a direct impact on business, politics, and people’s everyday lives.

It is precisely at times like these that a key question arises: Who takes responsibility – even when the going gets tough?

As the REWE Group, we regard this as our responsibility. As a food retailer, we have a special responsibility to ensure a reliable supply of goods to the public. This responsibility applies not only during periods of stability, but in particular then when markets come under pressure and supply chains face challenges. We do not view security of supply as something exceptional, but as the benchmark against which we measure ourselves.

At the same time, we are redefining corporate responsibility. Sustainability remains a key component of our strategy – even, and especially, under difficult circumstances. Climate protection, biodiversity, human rights due diligence and social cohesion are not issues that can be put on hold until things improve. Those who fail to act today are jeopardising the economic and social future of tomorrow.

We are well aware that the major challenges of our time cannot be tackled alone. Sustainable transformation can only succeed when businesses, policy-makers, civil society, suppliers and the agricultural sector work together. We are operating in an increasingly complex regulatory environment, and while the intentions behind this are good, in practice it often ties our hands. That is why we also see our efforts in this area as an invitation to engage in dialogue – to establish clear objectives, practical solutions and a reliable framework.

The REWE Group thinks and acts long term. We are constantly investing in our sites, logistics, digitalisation and our employees – with a clear focus on sustainability, resilience and responsibility. We do not think in terms of quarters, but timeframes that make sustainable business practices possible in the first place.

Our new progress report shows how we are putting this commitment into practice: with clear objectives, measurable progress and partnerships that make a real difference. It reflects our philosophy of not delegating, but actively shaping responsibility.

Responsibility is demonstrated not through words, but through our daily actions. Even when the going gets tough, we remain true to our values – towards our customers, our employees and society as a whole.

I invite you to continue on this journey with us.

Yours, Lionel Souque
